Vineyard Notes
The 2021 Red blend is a marriage of two vineyards, an old vine Zinfandel vineyard on gravelly loam and a mature Mourvedre vineyard grown in decomposed volcanic soils.
Production Notes
The Zin was destemmed, fermented wild with daily pumpers in a closed top tank, while the Mourvedre underwent semi-carbonic and whole cluster fermentation. It was later foot-treaded, and received punch-downs and pump-overs throughout fermentation. Both lots were left on skins for more than three weeks, then pressed and drained to second use and older French oak barrels where they completed malolactic fermentation. A touch of Cabernet Sauvignon from a mountaintop vineyard was splashed in while no-one was looking, and it adds a bit of backbone to this otherwise fragrant, juicy red wine.
